حي سطل الفحم

Aurélie Defez

Religion is an essential part of the Kolenkit neighborhood: more than half of the population there is Muslim. Aurélie felt a gap between the religious population and the way the municipality treats the district. The inhabitants feel threatened by their policy. As a result, the communities continue to be strongly segregated and the social and cultural integration is limited. She turned a prayer mat, a representation of the significance of the Islam in the district, into a statement by adding the logo of Amsterdam. With her project she aims to present these Kolenkit inhabitants as legitimate constituents of Amsterdam – simply because they are.
