Remnants of the addicts’ shared mindspace

Cas van Son

When Cas started researching the subject of ‘health’, he decided to map all the health care and social care institutions in Athens. He found out something quite remarkable: the majority of these places are located in one part of the city. The circle barely offered any kind of local care, or very specific ones. There was one private doctor’s office, focused on throat, nose and mouth care. While Cas went around the city to analyse these locations, he was distracted by the objects lying around on the pavement next to the institutions. He went around collecting these items and put them together into compositions. He then analyzed his pictures in relation to the locations in the Circle: they were strongly connected to people’s addiction, such as smoking, drugs and alcohol. These artifacts openly showed the underlying health issues, in a public space.
