Bolardo in Use

Thomas Woltmann

Bolardos are ever-present in public spaces in cities all over the world. Madrid is no exception. These medium high poles are meant to guarantee safety, security and to mark borders between roads and pathways. They are designed to be visible while blending in with the surroundings at the same time. Some have a classic look, others look more modern. Often these objects are negatively perceived – if perceived at all. Thomas believes that they have a much bigger potential. He decided to expand their role in urban life by proposing new functions and by giving them more purpose and value to the people that live next to them. Thomas hopes to inspire the citizens of Madrid that they too can take part in deciding how the urban space is formed and used.
